This paper attempts to analyse Anita Desai’s Fire on the Mountain and how it depicts the social barriers to the growth of a woman. It analyses the alienation of Nanda Kaul and her great-granddaughter, Raka and the intervention of Ila Das, the childhood friend of Nanda. Further, the paper explores how Anita Desai projects female freedom as only a myth.
